Education
During the General Election, West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin repeatedly said that he would talk to the Education Secretary to try and increase the funding to the Thomas Hardye School following budget cuts.
Yet, as noted by the government it “remains the case that a school in one part of the country can receive over 50% more funding than an identical school...[elsewhere in] the country.” Labour party members across Dorchester and district believe that instead of cutting education budgets, they should be increased to meet the greater running costs that all schools in Dorset are facing due to inflation. The government's refusal to address the funding shortfall is leading to cuts in the numbers of staff which will have a negative impact on all pupils. Dorchester & District Labour voice support for Junior Doctors
Dorchester & District Labour Party have given their support to Junior Doctors in the ongoing dispute over their contracts.
Labour spokes person Claudia Sorin said "The local branch have discussed the matter of the Junior Doctors contracts and wanted to express our concerns and support for the action they have taken."
Dorchester & District Labour has formed a motion which they intend to support through their party and within the trades union movement.
Claudia continued "We recognise the crucial role that Junior Doctors play in the National Health Service and within our own community locally. As Dorchester hosts the County Hospital we felt it right to ensure that workers in the NHS heard us speak out. We recognise that Junior Doctors already provide a 7 day a week NHS and that much of this work is unpaid. We are concerned that the demand on Doctors becomes so high that the NHS cannot meet expectations, leading to a call for privatisation".
Labour is arranging to lodge a motion recently passed at a branch meeting with the Trades Union Congress to call on them and affiliated unions to be more vocal in supporting Junior Doctors locally and nationally.

Living Wage Campaign
Labour believe that the living wage is the minimum level that employees should earn. Labour in West Dorset are pursuing this cause firstly through public sector organisations. This is because they are among the biggest employers in West Dorset. We want to encourage them to become accredited Living wage employers, ensuring all suppliers and services they use also pay a Living Wage. This would impact both the Public and Private Sector, ensuring many get a pay rise!
We have been successful in pursuing a Living Wage for the employees of Dorchester Town Council. Barry Thompson has pursued the District Council to implement this level of pay. We will continue to press for these organisations to seek full accreditation. You can find out more about the living wage at www.livingwage.org.uk |
